By Jenna Jolie Republic Day is an important national holiday that commemorates the establishment of the Constitution of India. The adoption of the constitution marked the transition to full independence from Britain as it ended Lord Mountbatten's role as governor-general of India. 26 January was chosen as the date for the adoption of the constitution as it was on 26 January 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress.
Much effort is put towards organizing events and celebrations that occur on Republic Day in India. Large military parades are held in New Delhi and the state capitals. Representatives of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force and traditional dance troupes take part in the parades.
